Message from Faculty

As the organizer of the short course on Introduction to Data Mining with Applications, which will be held on the 26th and 27th of November, it is a great pleasure to write this message.

As a teacher and scientist, I find the students in Sri Lanka are extremely talented, but lack mathematical and statistical skills. Mathematical and statistical skills are highly sought after by employers and are also have many applications in research. Hence, learning techniques such as data mining is one way developing statistical and mathematical, which could enhance the employability of students and also develop skills that could be used for research. Data mining is a computational process of pattern recognition in large datasets involving methods at the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics and database systems. With the advancement of the technology, large volumes of data are being captured around the world in the form of business transactions, clinical trials, image databases, web data, social media data and many others. Hence, data mining methods are becoming increasingly important in computational and statistical applications, and research where problems with large and diverse data are common.

Therefore, this short course in Introduction to Data Mining with Applications will undoubtedly help our students in the physical sciences of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka by developing their mathematical and statistical skills, which will enhance their employability and also a stepping stone to becoming competent researchers in Sri Lanka.

Statistical Data Mining is an obvious prerequisite to enter the modern Data Science platform. The intention of offering this short course with the financial assistance of the Quality and Innovation Grant (QIG) coming under the HETC project is to introduce Data Sciences to the undergraduate curriculum and to give the idea of rapidly developing trends in Computational Statistics in the world.

Besides addressing the knowledge and practical skills of students, we are trying to develop students’ innovative thinking and entrepreneurial attitudes by way of conducting a peer-to-peer short course among students community with the guidance of senior academics in this field.
